A cable that carries several video channels between the facilities of a cable television company.

An LED in which incoherent light is emitted at all points along the pn junction.

A telecommunications outlet that is placed in front of the wall or pole.

A panel for electrical or data communications connections placed on a wall or pole.

A rapid rise in current or voltage, usually followed by a fall back to a normal level. Also referred to as a transient.

A device that contains a special electronic circuit that monitors the incoming voltage level and then trips a circuit breaker when an over-voltage reaches a certain level, called the over-voltage threshold.

The process by which transient voltage surges are prevented from reaching sensitive electronic equipment. See also surge protector.

Super Video Graphics Array. A monitor lead.
Also called Super VGA. It is an improvement on the previous VGA standard, allowing higher resolutions and colour bit-depths for display.

Steel wire armoured cable, commonly abbreviated as SWA, is a hard-wearing power cable designed for the supply of mains electricity. It is one of a number of armoured electrical cables – which include 11kV Cable and 33kV Cable – and is found in underground systems, power networks and cable ducting.

The typical construction of an SWA cable can be broken down as follows:

Conductor: consists of plain stranded copper (cables are classified to indicate the degree of flexibility. Class 2 refers to rigid stranded copper conductors as stipulated by British Standard BS EN 60228:2005)

Insulation: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is used in a number of power cables because it has good water resistance and excellent electrical properties. Insulation in cables ensures that conductors and other metal substances do not come into contact with each other.

Bedding: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bedding is used to provide a protective boundary between inner and outer layers of the cable.

Armour: Steel wire armour provides mechanical protection, which means the cable can withstand higher stresses, be buried directly and used in external or underground projects.

The armouring is normally connected to earth and can sometimes be used as the circuit protective conductor ("earth wire") for the equipment supplied by cable.

Sheath: a black PVC sheath holds all components of the cable together and provides additional protection from external stresses.
The PVC version of SWA cable,[5] described above, meets the requirements of both British Standard BS5467 and International Electrotechnical Commission standard IEC 60502.[6] It is known as SWA BS5467 Cable and it has a voltage rating of 600/1000V.[7]

SWA cable can be referred to more generally as mains cable, armoured cable, power cable and booklet armoured cable. The name power cable, however, applies to a wide range of cables including 6381Y, NYCY, NYY-J and 6491X Cable.

A mechanical, optical, or optomechanical device that completes or breaks an optical path or routes an optical signal.

A network that routes signals to their destinations by switching circuits or packets. Two different packets of information may not take the same route to get to the same destination in a packet switched network.

SY Control Cable is a flexible instrumentation cable designed for measuring, control or regulation in the field of process automation.

It is a highly flexible multicore cable, with (class 5) copper conductors and a galvanised steelwire braid (GSWB) for mechanical protection. The cable is typically manufactured with PVC insulation, bedding and a transparent PVC sheath.

The transparent sheath means signs of deterioration, damage or corrosion can be detected with ease.

SY has a voltage rating of 300/500V and meets the requirements of both BS6500[3] and VDE0250 standards.

Transmission in which the data is transmitted at a fixed rate with the transmitter and receiver being synchronized.

A standard for digital transmission in North America. A digital transmission link with a capacity of 1.544Mbps (1,619,001 bits per second), T-1 lines are used for connecting networks across remote distances. Bridges and routers are used to connect LANs over T-1 networks.
